Objective To investigate the curative effect of Yixue Xifeng soup combined with Loratadine on skin pruritus of maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Methods A total of 156 MHD patients with skin pruritus in our hospital from June 2013 to December 2015 were enrolled into the study and randomly divided into observation group and control group with 78 cases in each group. The patients in the control group were given Loratadine while the cases in the observation group were given Yixue Xifeng soup combined with Loratadine. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score, the improved Duo score, and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) score were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. Results There were no significant differences in the baseline data, the scores of VAS, the improved Duo or PSQI score before treatment between the two groups (P > 0.05). The scores of VAS, the improved Duo score and PSQI score in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group in 6 weeks after treatment (P < 0.05). During the period of treatment, none of the patients had adverse reactions. Conclusions Yixue Xifeng soup combined with Loratadine could significantly alleviate skin pruritus and improve the sleep quality of MHD patients, which is safe, reliable and worthy of clinical promotion.
