Objective To explore the possible association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 5-hydroxytryptamine 1A receptor (5-HT1AR) gene C(-1019)G (rs6295) and anxiety disorder [general anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder (PD)] in Chinese Han population. Methods SNP of 5-HT1AR gene C(-1019)G (rs6295) were analyzed by a ligase detection reaction (LDR)-based method in 319 anxiety disorder cases (210 GAD cases and 109 PD cases) and 300 unrelated, sex-matched healthy control subjects. GAD and PD were diagnosed by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) criteria. In addition, polymorphisms of 5-HT1AR gene were compared between male and female cases of anxiety and controls. Results No significant difference was observed between the anxiety patients and the healthy controls in the genotype distribution and allele frequencies of the 5-HT1AR gene C(-1019)G. Similarly, no significant diffe-rences were found between male and female cases in the GAD cases and PD cases. Conclusions 5-HT1AR C(-1019)G may not be iconic locus in the Chinese Han population with anxiety disorders because of lack of evidence.
